Examines the evolution of artistic thought and expression during Spain’s transition from a fascist regime to a modern democracy in the 1970’s. Provides an introduction to Spain’s contemporary art scene and illustrates its lasting impact on Spanish trends and values.

Requirements: Graduate or Undergratuate students, minimum age: 18. Fluent in English.

Course Description

Spanish Contemporary ArtSpain’s major transition from a fascist regime to a democratic state in the 1970’s revolutionized artistic thought and expression. This course looks at a defining period in Spanish art, which to this day remains one of the country’s most interesting social movements.

From ephemeral art in the 70’s to neo-conceptual art in the 90’s and on to current trends in Spanish art, students are walked through the vivid world of Spain’s contemporary art scene. The trends and values established during this influential period are seen to have a lasting impression on the national psyche.
